New Year, New Updates

Happy New Year!  2009 has come and gone, 2010 is here, although almost 1 month through! We are busy on several projects including the redesign of our own website which was planned for release in 2009. Hosemaker.co.uk was released at the end of 2009, we are now working on the improved Thatcham Online website as well as another commercial site, nutsnbolt.co.uk.  We have other things going on as well, but more on those as they develop.

Website re-design

We are currently re-developing our website, devzen.co.uk. We estimate this will be completed within the next two weeks, so by mid September. This will have a completly new look and feel, JQuery sliders, feature a portfolio with testimonials and links to clients websites, postings from our Twitter account, links to our Facebook page, and a more detailed services page. Is there something you would like to see on the new website?

Engage with people

There are several ways to ensure people keep visiting your website.  These include:

Advertising

We often get asked "how can I make money from my website?"  Assuming that this is ignoring any product or service you are offering, then the only way to bring money in from your website is to advertise.  There are several ways of achieving this:

Help over the Internet

As you may or may not know, DevZen can offer remote help. That is we can help you fix or maintain your computer or even train you without the need for us to be on site. That is we can provide a service over the Internet using various technologies:

Follow us on Twitter

Validation

Validation is where code, (X)HTML and CSS, from a website is checked against the standards published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to ensure the code is correct. DevZen is often asked "why should I bother with validation?"

Choosing the right CMS

So you want to set-up a new website and have chosen to use a content Management System (CMS). The question is "Which CMS do I use?" Good question and to be honest, one that is not easy to answer. Essentially it depends on what you want from the CMS, both short and long term.

External Icons

Most website have links to external websites and many with links to bookmarking/sharing websites. With both of these, icons are often used to represent a link to an external site and the websites themselves.

Domain Names and Hosting

Regardless of your websites content, you will need to register a domain name and buy a hosting package. DevZen can organise both of these for you, however, you can also easily achieve this yourself. For registering domain names, DevZen reccomends using 123-reg.co.uk. For hosting needs, DevZen recommends EUKHost.
